There have been some discussion on the effectiveness of Jiu Jitsu in the sport of MMA. For the most part, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters have lost to US wrestlers.

Dan Henderson soundly beat  Wanderlai Silva ( a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt) with a knockout at the last Pride. Matt Hughes demolished Royce Gracie last year in the UFC.

What happened to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in MMA?

Like anything else, you can not rely on one martial art or one skill set to win an MMA match. It really takes a mix of stand-up, takedowns, and ground work to complete the win. Matt Hughes and Dan Henderson are prime examples of this recent change.

Good luck to OC Jiu Jitsu and MMA instructor Rani Yahya in his quest to be the winner of the Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling Championships. The event will be held in Trenton, New Jersey  on May 5 and 6, 2007.

Rani’s toughest opponent will be Leo Vieira of the the Brasa team.

Our Olympic weight room will be finished this week. We will have over 1000 pounds of Olympic weights, 2 Olympic benches, racks, and barbells. Plus we have our custom grappling machine by Marpo Kinentics. The same machine used by Matt Hughes.

We will have 2 levels in Mixed Martial Arts - Beginning/Intermediate and Advanced. The Beginning/Intermediate program will be certified under Erik Paulson CSW program, as well as, the Advanced program. Students selected for the Advanced program will have the opportunity to train with Erik Paulson every other week.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No-Gi program will be ranked under the traditional grappling ranks of white, blue, purple, brown and black. We have 4 black belt instructors who will certify each student.

In addition, the DefendFast program will be ranked under the traditional JKD and Escrima programs. James Wilks and Danny Suarez are full instructors in both disciplines under Danny Inosanto, Paul Vunak, and Erik Paulson.

I saw a National Geographic show on people being attacked by animals in the woods. All the people had no weapons to fend off the animals.

Why?

The same reason why people think they will never be a victim of crime. No common sense.

I remember I went fishing in the remote wilderness in Canada when the steelhead trout were running. The lodge equipped the fly fishermen with a cowbell on the back of our vests. I said, “Why the bell ?”. They said it was to ward off the Grizzly bear in the area. I immediately got back in the boat and said no thanks.

You have to think of all the possibilities and go from there. They say analysis can cause paralysis, but there is a level of common sense that all should use. The same goes for investing in MLM schemes, hedge fund high returns, get rich quick schemes in the internet - you get the message.

Nothing is easy and everything requires work.

Prison for Internet molester

Texas man gets 9-year sentence. O.C. teen committed suicide two months after online seducer ended their relationship, court records show.

A 28-year-old Texas man pleaded guilty today to federal child molesting charges for traveling to Orange County in December 2005 for a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl he met on the Internet.

Kiley Ryan Bowers of Celina, Texas, admitted that he wooed the girl, and enticed her to send him nude photos and perform naked before a webcam. He also admitted that he later flew to Southern California and met the teenager for sex, first in a rental car and later in a motel.

The Lake Forest girl killed herself two months later after Bowers tried to end their online relationship. She left a note suggesting that he was at least partially responsible for causing her suicide, according to court documents.

Bowers pleaded guilty in federal court in Santa Ana to traveling across state lines to engage in child molestation, and transportation of child pornography over the Internet for causing the underage girl to send him lascivious photos.

A plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office calls for Bowers to serve nine years in a federal prison, followed by six years on probation and a lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Case in point:

The killer of Virginia Tech submitted video footage, clips, written statements to why he committed the crime. Who cares? Why give the honor of showcasing his material after killing over 30 students?

Why not honor the students who died in the massacre?

We have a serious problem in society that is not addressed by government or the citizens. We are letting special interest groups control our destiny. It is a cancer that will get out of control.

With the masses of video games out there, we are producing more fantasies for these kids.  It is hard for these kids to delineate between fantasy and reality (how many hours does your kids play?). They use similar games to  train our military soldiers, so  don’t be surprised if more kids are out in left field.

The game companies and rappers are not going away. These are products of society that has gotten out of control for the sheer benefit of profit.  The government will never put their foot down because of these special interest groups. All you have to do is to look at the tobacco industry, and nothing will be done. Nothing.

The only action you can do is to learn to protect yourself. No cop or fellow citizen will be able to help you in time of confusion or panic.
It is really up to you to control your own destiny.  

These kid killers can not be stopped. They will kill themselves in the end, and have. So, what can be done?

In any criminal situation, you only have seconds. Thought process is useless since panic and confusion sets in. To solve this  problem, you have to condition the body  through mechanical routines and patterns. Over time, these routines become memorized in the muscles. Then, when you are confronted with a situation, you systematically execute these techniques.

Systematically conditioning yourself and your techniques is the only effective way to self defense.

The Virginia Tech incident is a sad day in the US. You never know when things can happen to you.
