Self Protection is not a weekend course

October 21st, 2007 | by |

People are nuts.

I can’t tell you how many people, that I have met, who think a self protection course can be learned in a weekend or in a couple of months.

That is what technology is doing to us. We think we can intellectualize the moves and it will be stored in the old noggin for potential conflicts.

People are watching too many Sci-Fi programs.

I will tell you what reality will be like. It will be violent, brutal, and you will likely end up in the hospital if you lack any martial arts skills. If you think the criminal or thug has compassion, then lay off the poetry books and wake up.

What is more precious? Your life or spending your time to learn the martial arts.

Oh, I forgot. You believe in reincarnation. Never mind.

I just started at OCJJ at the beginning of October. Several people at work are already asking me about sparring and when I have a fight coming up; I laugh at them. Although those things are in the future for those who stick with it, OCJJ is interested in establishing technique and skill before throwing you out on the mat. In the past month, I have learned useful techniques and go over them in my mind after class; I understand that it will take time and dedicated practice to get where I want to be.
