The Concept of the Black Swan and Martial Arts
December 2nd, 2007 | by |The Black Swan are human events that have a huge impact - 9/11 is one example. The problem is that the majority of the people are unaware of how these events occur. People hardly focus on prevention, but the cure. So, all the fat Americans who will suffer from diabetes want a cure when instead they could have prevented the disease by eating right and exercising.
In the martial arts, there are “experts” in self defense. Most Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA academies, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and the rest of them don’t have a self defense class. Why? Because they are so myopic in their own little world, and don’t consider the what-if’s of what could happen. Students who participate in these specialize martial arts are sitting ducks for the Black Swan event?
What is the Black Swan in this case? A criminal with a knife or gun, a felon attacking you with a pole, and etc., These events can be life altering events. Yes, you can be killed or crippled for life.
So, do you think training in a uniform or MMA is going to protect you from a knife, gun or stick? If you do, then don’t blame your martial art — just your ignorant self. The martial arts is meant as a life skill that is practiced on a regular basis. Muscle memory equals automatic reaction.
The cheapest life insurance you can have is to train at OC Jiu Jitsu and MMA. You will be covered for the Black Swan.
